The Hydrogen Car
The hydrogen car is our future because hydrogen is the cleanest energy we know. The only emission it produces is water vapor, which is harmless.
The way the hydrogen technology works is quite simple. Basically, it uses a membrane to bring hydrogen in contact with air. This combination generates an electrical reaction that is channeled towards the engine and the batteries.
Here is when it gets complicated. Putting hydrogen fuel on board of cars is difficult because you need a large amount of this element. Moreover, hydrogen is unstable.
Currently there is a lot of research being done about the different ways to embark hydrogen fuel on board of the future hydrogen car. Some research projects are trying tanks that contain some sort of metal mesh that catches the hydrogen, so to say, and releases it slowly.
Another way is to put it under pressure in liquid or gas form, but the trouble here is that you would need very heavy tanks in order to avoid evaporation.
The third option has to do with gasoline or other petroleum derivatives I am afraid, and it is seen as the most realistic, at least at the moment.
This hydrogen car would have gasoline or another petroleum derivative on board. A device would then split the hydrogen from the rest of elements of the liquid. It would pollute more but it would be much cleaner than the conventional hundred per cent gas combustion.
The source of the hydrogen power
First of all it’s important to note that hydrogen is not an energy source but a carrier that allows accumulating energy from a source.
Hydrogen from water is a very clean energy as I said above. But it can pollute the environment too because it can also be obtained from nuclear energy and fossil fuels like methanol, natural gas, and others.
Hydrogen vehicles
Although in extremely limited numbers, there are already submarines, buses, and rockets running on hydrogen. The NASA uses hydrogen power and some aeronautical companies are researching and testing hydrogen planes.
But as we said, one of the biggest challenges is storing the hydrogen fuel. A tank of the same size as a conventional car lets you cover a much shorter distance than you would with a conventional car.
This is why at the moment and as a transition step, hybrid cars are presented as a feasible option. They contain a conventional combustion engine and another electric that runs with hydrogen power.
Saving money on gas with hydrogen fuel?
From the information above you can see that we’ll still have to wait a long time for our dream hydorgen car. But if you are someone who likes to take action, here are some tips to save gas. You can implement them easily today, including the run car on water system, while you wait for the hydrogen car to become a reality.
